Fire Destroys Log Home: |
The call came at 23:30 on March 8th, 2009. A log home
was on fire in the
Pine Mountain Volunteer Fire Department
district. The first firefighters arrived on scene at 23:45 with
one of our fast attack brush trucks. As luck would have it, the
battery on our main pumper truck shorted as soon as the key was
turned on. Initial observations showed total involvement of the
attached log garage with fire licking at the walls of the house.
Firefighters were forced to move the truck from its
initial attack position due to the intense heat that was
beginning to melt plastic light lens on the truck. Little time
was lost, however, and the hoses were charged and the fire
attacked. The drop tank was erected, filled with water from our
tanker and firefighting efforts continued for
several minutes. Approximately fifteen minutes later, mutual
aid in the form of a tanker, pumper and several
firefighters arrived from
Lakeway Volunteer Fire Department. These firefighters
immediately joined in the
firefighting
efforts. Shortly after, a tanker arrived from Summit
Volunteer Fire Department.
Because personnel from Summit and Lakeway were unfamiliar with
water drafting sites on the lake, as soon as their tankers
discharged water to the drop tank, two Pine Mountain
Volunteer Fire Department firefighters were sent along
with these tankers for guidance. An additional pumper from
Peel Volunteer Fire Department eventually arrived and
was placed in a standby mode. Firefighting
efforts continued well into the early morning hours but despite
these efforts, the house, garage and all contents were a total
loss. At approximately 03:00, Lakeway and Summit
firefighters were released. Peel remained in standby
for an additional 30 minutes when it too was released.
Pine Mountain Volunteer Fire Department
personnel and equipment remained on scene until 07:30 and left
when there was no chance of the fire reigniting. There were
several lessons learned from this fire. First of all, many of
the homes in our district are on roads and lanes too narrow for
fire apparatus to safely pass each other. This one-way traffic
may cause some delay in delivering water to the scene. Driveways
are narrow, curved and tree lined making backing up tankers to
offload water both difficult and time consuming. Although not
existing in this fire, it has been noted that some of our
members' homes may be all but impossible to reach with fire
apparatus, thus necessitating the use of 1000 feet or more of
hose from pumper to the point of attacking the fire.

brush fire blackens yard: |
On March 17th, 2009, at 1500 hours, Pine
Mountain Volunteer Fire Department received a call from
Marion County Sheriff's Office about an out of control grass
fire at the residence of a member. Firefighters
arrived within 10 minutes, some responding directly from their
residences with garden tools and leaf blowers. Initial
observations showed approximately one acre had been burned and
the fire was still spreading. The brush truck arrived a few
minutes later with two firefighters who
immediately began putting water on the areas of most concern
attempting to stop any further spread. Leaf blowers were being
operated by two firefighters, constructing fire
breaks around the perimeter of the flames to stop or at least
retard further spread of the flames. A second apparatus, a rapid
attack brush truck with 2 firefighters arrived
shortly thereafter and began to put water on another area of
concern closer to the residence. The combined efforts of the
firefighters and residents quickly contained any
further spread and the fire was essentially extinguished by
16:30. Cleanup efforts continued for about an hour more and all
personnel cleared the scene at 17:30.
